2. Kaokoland – Himbas
The further one proceeds inland, the more nature gives way to the wild barren expanses of Kaokoland. This vast, arid and isolated territory of mountains and wide valleys, never fails to fascinate when explored at the leisurely pace imposed by the winding tracks.
Kaokaland with its dry river beds containing many surprises is a harsh region and its inhabitants have learned to adapt and survive.
In Opuwo, the main small town in Kaokoland, you will come across the first Himba, an ethnic group that have long fascinated both ethnologists and travellers.
The Himba are proud, hieratic, semi-nomadic cattle-herders who traditionally live in kraals (camps) scattered throughout Kaololand. Seeing the Himba women with their bodies covered in red-ochre extracted from haematites is certainly one of the highlights of Namibia.
