Flora & Fauna

Animal life in Namibia is exceptionally rich and diverse. In addition to the native animals of the African steppes and savannas, a remarkable number of endemic species also abound.

Watching animals and other species in their natural element is facilitated by local infrastructures and a rigorous conservation policy. The immense, majestic Etosha National Park is a song in praise of wildlife but visitors will also be surprised by the marine fauna and the countless species of birds that brighten this paradise.

The country’s flora includes some exceptional varieties. During the dry season from May to August, Namibia resembles a vast dark purple coloured expanse, dotted with sparse bushes burnt by the sun. From January to April, a period with sporadic rains, one can witness a miraculous awakening of nature when the flat open country clothes itself in a soft, shimmering coat of down.

Among the botanical curiosities indigenous to the region are the kokerboom which belongs to the aloe family and the strange weltwishia conifer that lives up to 1000 years. During the wet season a large variety of lichen blossom along the coast bursting out in 1000 colours.
